HOW TO GET INTO GRAPHIC DESIGN

If you intend to work for a major design firm, you will almost certainly need a degree in graphic design. But even if you are going to be a freelance graphic designer, it is a good idea to get as much education as you can.

STEPS

(1) Get an education. If you intend to work for a major design firm, you will almost certainly need a degree ingraphic design. But even if you are going to be a freelance graphic designer, it is a good idea to get as much education as you can. Even a certificate program can help you learn a lot more about your trade.

(2) Try to become familiar with some of the major graphic design software programs out there. These include Adobe Indesign, Microsoft Publisher, Quark Xpress and CorelDRAW. While you will probably develop a liking for one particular program, it is best to be familiar with several. Adobe Creative Suite includes Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Premiere, Photoshop, InDesign and After Effects. Learn the tools of the trade.

(3) Look around for ideas. A good designer always has a store of ideas from which to draw. Keep a notebook in which you can jot down ideas when they come to you. Keep an eye on current trends.

(4) Find your personal style. You should be able to develop a style that is all your own and that will make you unique in the design world. This will help you to get a job or to land clients. Do not be afraid to be different. That is how great things happen!

(5) Land a job. If you are trying to get hired by a marketing firm, get ready for some hard work. Have a professional resume prepared that will highlight your education, experience, and talents. Accentuate whatever particular area is your greatest strength. And be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up. If you are working as a freelance graphic designer, you have to market yourself. Develop a marketing campaign that will tell potential clients why they should choose you over everyone else.

(6) Work hard every time. Once you get a position or land a client, give it everything you have. Never slack off on a job. Put every ounce of creative energy you have into every job you do, even if it seems like a minor job. It will pay off in the end, in the form of recognition or more clients.

TIPS

(1) Remember: keep learning! Keep doing research and taking classes.

(2) Always communicate with your clients and find out exactly what they are looking for.

(3) Do not give away your work. Designers should never have to create something for free.

(4) Over time, try to develop your own style; something that sets you apart from the rest.
